WWE Raw for 12/5/16

Watch: USA Network, Hulu

Frank Erwin Center – Austin, Texas

Welcome Wrestling With Words readers to another Monday Night Raw review! Last week Sasha Banks recaptured the WWE Raw Women’s Championship from Charlotte plus Rich Swann became the new Cruiserweight Champion on 205 Live. Roman Reigns now has a shot for Kevin Owen’s Universal title at Roadblock: End of the Line and Jericho will be seeking revenge after Rollins ambushed him last week. Tonight it all falls out so lets jump into the review!

Seth Rollins starts off the show by coming out to the ring and saying he wants Triple H. However, the only way to get Triple H to pay attention to him is to capture the WWE Universal title. But, for that to happen Rollins says he must remove Chris Jericho from the equation. Kevin Owens comes out to interrupt Rollins. Rollins asks how Chris Jericho is doing and how their friendship is. After Owens gives a great passionate promo about being a fighting champion, Kevin Owens tells Rollins that he’s given Jericho three Christmas gifts. The first is a United States title match against Roman Reigns tonight. The second is a match against Seth Rollins at Roadblock: End of the Line. The final gift is a surprise opponent for Rollins tonight. The Big Show makes his return to face Rollins right away!

Seth Rollins def. Big Show

Big Show comes out the gate tossing Rollins around the ring early on. Kevin Owens is at ringside cheering Big Show on. Kevin Owens got on the apron and yelled at Big Show to finish Rollins off, but Big Show choke slammed Owens into the ring. Big Show then left the ring losing the match via count out. Seth Rollins lands a Pedigree on Owens before leaving the ring himself.

Jack Gallagher def. Ariya Daivari

This was a short match. Gallagher defeated Daivari with a headbutt to the chest followed by a dropkick. After the match Gallagher offered Daivari a handshake, but Daivari attacked Gallagher’s knee with a kick. Daivari followed up the attack with a running chop block that looked painful.

Gallagher’s introductory video package | Highlights

Backstage Kevin Owens runs into Mick Foley. Owens wants his match with Sami Zayn called off after he took that Pedigree from Seth Rollins, but Mick Foley isn’t buying it. KO then runs into Jericho backstage who just arrived at the show. Owens tells Jericho about all the gifts he got him, but it doesn’t really impress Jericho. Owens asks Jericho if they both are good, but Jericho says they are not good despite the gifts KO has given him.

Enzo and Cass are backstage talking when they notice Rusev yelling at Lana. Enzo tries to intervene, but Rusev calls Enzo pathetic and that Lana deserves someone like Enzo. Lana takes off her wedding ring as Rusev leaves her. Enzo picks up the wedding ring and tries to sweet talk Lana. After commercial Enzo is still talking to Lana. Lana thinks that if Rusev saw someone else with Lana that he might treat her better. Lana tells Enzo to meet her in her hotel room later.

Kevin Owens def. Sami Zayn

This was a great match overall. Sami Zayn looked really good in this one. Zayn pulled off a tornado DDT onto the apron. On the outside Zayn jumped through the ropes for another tornado DDT. In the ring Sami Zayn went for the half nelson suplex for the near fall. Owens came back into the match when Zayn went for the Superplex, but Owens came back with the fisherman buster from the top rope. In the end Sami Zayn tried putting Owens away with a third tornado DDT, an exploder suplex in the corner, and the blue thunder bomb but that still wasn’t enough for the three count. Sami brought Owens to the outside and landed yet another exploder suplex but into the barricade. Back in the ring Owens caught Sami off guard with the Pop-Up Powerbomb for the victory.

Backstage Roman walks into Jericho’s locker room. Roman told Jericho to get ready for the match tonight, but Jericho fired back by saying that Roman has been getting lucky recently and that tonight luck may be on Jericho’s side. Roman told Jericho that he may just be doing Kevin Owen’s dirty work again which made Jericho think.

Also backstage Sasha Banks is being interviewed. She told the interviewer that Charlotte brings out the best in her and that Charlotte doesn’t deserve to be under Ric Flair’s legacy. The interviewer asked about Charlotte’s rematch clause and Sasha responded by challenging Charlotte to an Iron Man match.

Rich Swann def. TJ Perkins

Before this one they did a great video package on Rich Swann’s background and personal journey to the WWE. To start the match the two go back and forth. TJ gets the upperhand on Swann and dabs on him. Swann returns the dab after getting the upperhand on Perkins. The match finished with Swann hitting the spin kick on Perkins for the 3 count. A decent match and a bit longer than usual for cruiserweight matches on Raw.

Highlights | Rich Swann’s post-match interview

Bayley def. Alicia Fox

This match is happening because Bayley gave Alicia’s crush, Cedric Alexander, a Bayley bear and that made Alicia Fox mad. This match was a quick one. Bayley pinned Alicia Fox with the Belly to Bayley pretty much right out the gate for the three count.

Backstage Enzo is telling Cass how hyped he is to meet Lana at her hotel room tonight. Cass is trying to warn him but, Enzo shows Cass a selfie that Lana sent her and then Enzo takes off in a dead sprint. Rusev approaches Cass after to ask where Lana went, but Cass doesn’t know. Things get heated and Rusev challenges Cass to a match later on tonight.

The Tussle In Texas: Mark Henry def. Titus O'Neil

They had graphics hyping this match up sarcastically. Even the commentators were going nuts before this thing. Right away Mark Henry lands the World’s Strongest Slam and pins Titus O’Neil despite the hype.

Backstage Enzo is arguing with his Uber driver on the cellphone because the driver got lost. A limo pulls up however and out walks Ric Flair. Enzo tells Ric Flair what the deal is and Ric Flair lets Enzo use his limo to go meet Lana.

Also backstage Kevin Owens is making another effort to get Chris Jericho back on his side. Jericho ultimately tells Owens to get away from him.

WWE United States Championship: Roman Reigns (c) def. Chris Jericho

Roman Reigns goes for the Superman Punch early on, but Jericho got out of it. Jericho went for a springboard dropkick, but missed which set up the drive by kick from Roman Reigns. Roman attempted another Superman punch, but Jericho dodged it again and landed the Lionsault for the 2 count. Roman landed the Samoan Drop and then finally landed the Superman punch for another near fall. Reigns called for the Spear, but Jericho tried to counter with Codebreaker. Roman caught him though and landed a sit-out powerbomb for a 2 count. Jericho locked in the Walls of Jericho, but Roman made it to the ropes. Kevin Owens from out of nowhere and superkicks Roman from the outside while he’s holding on to the ropes. This set up the Codebreaker which Reigns was able to kick out of. Jericho starts arguing with Owens on the apron and tells him to leave. Jericho turns around and leapfrogs a Spear from Reigns, but Reigns hits the rope and is able to land his second spear attempt for the victory.

Cass is out for his match against Rusev, but when Rusev’s theme hits he’s nowhere to be found. We now see Enzo at Lana’s hotel knocking on the door. She brings him in and slowly seduces him even though Enzo is having second thoughts. Lana is able to get Enzo down to his underwear and then calls in Rusev. Rusev comes into the room and starts destroying Enzo by throwing him around the hotel room and breaking objects over his body. Rusev drags Enzo’s lifeless body out of the hotel room and Lana shuts the door leaving a Do Not Disturb sign on the handle.

Cesaro & Sheamus vs. The Club

This match is to determine the #1 Contenders for the New Day’s Tag Team Championships so The New Day is ringside for this one. After a pretty good match all three of the teams ended up brawling with each other so the match ended up as a no contest we are left with no #1 contender.

The New Day learn about their title defense next week on RAW

Charlotte comes out to end the show by making a public apology to her father. Charlotte makes her case and then asks Ric Flair to come out to the ring. Ric Flair makes his entrance and hugs his daughter in the ring. Charlotte betrays her father again when she slaps him in the face and calls him a son of a bitch. Sasha Banks comes running down the ramp to make the save, but Charlotte catches Sasha with a knee to the head. On the outside of the ring Charlotte throws Sasha into the ring post while Ric Flair observes in tears.

WWE RAW FOR 12/5/16
  • Decent - 6/10

This Raw didn't have very many lows, but didn't have too many highs either. Owens/Zayn and Jericho/Reigns were the clear highlights of the night, but other then that everything was just average. Overall a decent show.
