Southern Indies Weekly 2/10/16

In this week’s column, coverage of AJ Styles’ last independent match, plus Francisco Ciatso, Colby Corino vs Fred Yehi, Robbie E, and a whole lot more!

AJ Goes Out in Style(s)

AJ Styles wrestled his last bout on the independent circuit for the foreseeable future, and perhaps forever, this past weekend for Georgia Premier Wrestling. He faced Corey Hollis, who legitimately was a huge fan of Styles before Corey trained to be a wrestler. A sellout crowd in Canton GA saw both men go at it for approximately fifteen minutes until AJ secured the win with the Styles Clash.

New AIWF Champions Crowned

While we don’t have complete results from the AIWF’s co-promotional cards in the region last weekend, we do know that 2 new champions were crowned. Francisco Ciatso (pictured at the top of this page) defeated Drew Game to win the AIWF Americas champion on Saturday night in Albany GA, and Ray Fury defeated Thomas Cage to win the AIWF Cruiserweight title (also believed to have been in Albany, but may have been the next day in Pikeville TN). Actually a third champion was also crowned, but the promotion announced on Facebook Monday afternoon that Luscious Laron was stripped of the AIWF TV title he had won in Albany, and that the title has been deactivated. It appears that Syndicate Promotions Wrestling, which was the promotion of record for the Albany card, and the AIWF decided to part ways shortly after the event. SPW will be recognizing Laron as the “SPW TV champion” going forward. Confused yet?

More About Georgia and the Southeast

Aside from this column, another great source of information on independent wrestling in the southeast is Georgia Wrestling History. They cover promotions outside our geographical borders (Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, west Tennessee and central North Carolina) and host several great podcasts every week, so be sure to check them out on a regular basis.

Breaking: Shortly before this column was scheduled to be published, I received word that Jay Farley, who wrestled primarily around Chattanooga and trained several wrestlers in the area, passed away. We hope to have more information next weekend. If any readers can help with biographical information (related to his wrestling career), please e-mail me at

NOTES: This was a legit sellout in the venue; the promotion announced they could only seat 450 fans, though ended up with a little over 470 in the venue and 25 more turned away … the Georgia street fight was a wild affair involving tables, ladders and chairs … AJ gave a very nice speech after his match thanking the fans and showing respect to Hollis. Scott Hensley, who worked as a commentator and hype man on the card, has a nice write-up here

Upcoming Cards

TWE Chattanooga is bringing in Colby Corino (who has previously appeared for the promotion along with father Steve) on 2/13 to face Fred Yehi in a unique ROH vs Evolve matchup. Yehi is the current Indie Wrestling Channel World champion. The IWC is a Roku channel which features content from dozens of independent promotions.

Universal Independent Wrestling has Murder One vs TNA’s Robbie E in Temple GA on 2/13 in a match for Murder’s UIW Heavyweight title. Also scheduled is Chip Day vs Ken Lee for the vacant UIW U.S. title. I dare any fan that attends to do a drinking game based on the number of kicks thrown in that bout.

Alternative Pro Wrestling in Royston GA presents a Dog Collar match this Friday as rivals Scott Mayson and Jacob Ashworth look to settle their beef once and for all. APW uses wrestlers that appear in several other northeast Georgia-based promotions including Why We Wrestle and Southern Fried Championship Wrestling and served as almost a feeder system for Anarchy Wrestling in years past.

Looking Ahead

Deep Southern Championship Wrestling will be bringing ladies wrestling to the forefront this month. In addition to two ladies matches scheduled for this weekend’s card in Blue Ridge GA, they present the 2nd annual Girls Night Out card on 2/27. Already announced is Priscilla Kelly vs Tiffany Roxx, Dementia D’Rose vs Kacee Carlisle and Jessica Leigh vs Austynn Madison.

Scott Hensley, who was involved with the promotion of last year’s Scenic City Invitational tournament, is promoting a live event at the White Oak Baptist Church in Chattanooga TN on 2/19 to raise money and baseball gloves for an upcoming mission to Jamaica. I know Scott well, and three of the most important things in the world to him are his faith, baseball and wrestling, and he has somehow managed to combine all three into one nifty little package.

(DISCLAIMERS: I have worked for WrestleMerica, Peachstate Wrestling Alliance and NWA Atlanta in the last year, and have a financial relationship with the owners of Empire Wrestling regarding the Scenic City Invitational. This column is intended to feature ALL promotions in the region, and I will do my best to remain impartial and cover promotions regardless of whether or not I work for them or are in their “good graces”. For purposes of this column, the “southern U.S.” is defined as cities and towns within 180 miles of Atlanta.)
