Southern Indies Weekly 1/20/16

This week’s column is chock full of Chase Owens, two of the bestest friends you’ll ever meet, and an upcoming card loaded with legends.

The Besties are the Bestest of the Best

The team of Michael Stevens & Zac Edwards, collectively known as the Beautiful Bald Besties, were named Best Tag Team of 2015 by Georgia Wrestling History, and they are clearly not resting on their laurels. This past weekend they won a one-night tournament for the vacant Peachstate Wrestling Alliance Tag Team titles, defeating the teams of AJ Steele & Tyson Dean and #trendingnow (Ace Haven & Charles Zanders) in a three-way match in the finals. Considering that Peachstate won GWH’s Best Promotion award in 2015, one could say that the best tag team now holds the titles in the best promotion. Or one could just like to say the word “best” a lot.

Chase-ing Fire

The other tournament held in the area last weekend saw Chase Owens crowned the inaugural Twin States Wrestling Heavyweight champion, beating Eric Wayne in the finals. After the match, Wayne extracted a measure of revenge on Owens, throwing fire at the new champion (see video below). The promotion has announced a return date for 3/6, with Chase defending the title against Jimmy Rave.

Big Time Wrestling, which promotes events across the country featuring appearances by legends and other big names, returns to the area on 2/27 with a card at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. BTW packed the venue a year ago for a card featuring the Rock & Roll Express, the Midnight Express, Jimmy Valiant, Ricky Steamboat, Barry Windham, Matt Hardy vs Sabu and more, and is using the same strategy this time around. Two matches will be held inside of a steel cage, as Rock & Roll will face the Powers of Pain and Matt Hardy takes on Ethan Carter III. Also announced is Jim Cornette vs Baby Doll, Scott Steiner in action, and non-wrestling appearances by Road Warrior Animal and Lex Luger.

(DISCLAIMERS: I have worked for WrestleMerica, Peachstate Wrestling Alliance and NWA Atlanta in the last year, and have a financial relationship with the owners of Empire Wrestling regarding the Scenic City Invitational. This column is intended to feature ALL promotions in the region, and I will do my best to remain impartial and cover promotions regardless of whether or not I work for them or are in their “good graces”. For purposes of this column, the “southern U.S.” is defined as cities and towns within 180 miles of Atlanta.)
