Welcome back to our weekly review of WWE NXT here at Wrestling With Words. Following last week’s backstage confrontation, Carmella will go one-on-one with Alexa Bliss. Also announced for tonight’s show is the return of former NXT Tag Team Champions American Alpha. Let’s get into it.
Commentary mentions that Carmella has recently made her intentions to capture Asuka’s NXT Women’s Championship clear. This was a briskly paced bout with both women working hard. Carmella has improved leaps and bounds in the past few months, which was certainly on display here. Eventually, Bliss picked up the win with a Twisted Bliss.
We get a quick recap of NXT TV two weeks ago, where Shinsuke Nakamura challenged Finn Balor to a match. Afterwards, we head backstage for a sit-down interview with Nakamura. Nakamura says that he’s known Balor for ten years. He then adds that he’s very good friends with Finn, but he must go through “The Icon” if he wants to become the NXT Champion.
Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviews Bayley, asking her how it feels to be back. Bayley says that she’s feeling good, and she’s ready to get back her NXT Women’s Championship. Bayley is then interrupted by Alexa Bliss, who says that she doesn’t deserve a title rematch. In closing, Alexa adds: “If you want a shot at Asuka, you have to go through me.”
Potjes, as well as having a new ring name, has a new entrance theme. This was a quick match. Almas pinned Potjes after hitting a running knee in the corner.
Backstage, Andrea D’Marco asks Austin Aries what his reason for attacking No Way Jose was. Aries says that the self-entitled fans should have felt privileged to see him the second he arrived in NXT. Aries also mentions that Jose has not accomplished a fraction of what he has, yet the fans still adore him. He then adds that everything he does from here on out is the fans’ fault.
Next, Finn Balor comments on his upcoming match with Shinsuke Nakamura. Finn says that Shinsuke helped him get acclimated to life in Japan. He notes that, in this business, you meet a lot of work-related friends, but Nakamura is more than that. When Balor heard the news that Shinsuke was joining NXT, he wanted to return the favor and help him adapt to NXT. Finn mentions that they’ve faced each other in Japan, but this time, it feels special.
This was an action-packed match that effectively gave Gargano and Ciampa momentum heading into the Cruiserweight Classic. Gargano and Ciampa picked up the win after a double superkick on Ryder. Gargano & Ciampa cut a post-match promo, saying they want a shot at the NXT Tag Team Championship, citing the fact that they defeated The Revival two weeks ago. Next, out comes American Alpha, who claim that they will regain their titles once they take care of The Authors Of Pain. This brings out NXT General Manager William Regal, who announces that The Revival will face American Alpha in a two-out-of-three-falls tag team match next week. American Alpha then shakes hands with Gargano & Ciampa before being blindsided by The Authors Of Pain.
Overall, I thought this was a very good show. The opening match was solid and the main event was surprisingly enjoyable as well. As always, thanks for reading.
