Lucha Libre NJPW Reviews

NJPW Presents: Fantastica Mania (Night 4) Review

This card has potential to be an outstanding show, the CMLL wrestlers always give 100% even if they are wrestling in a farm in Guadalajara. I keep up to date with all the going ons in CMLL but I rarely see their shows, so for me I will learn about the Mexican contingent just by watching this show. CJ Parker is teaming with Atlantis! What a hoot brothers! Bushi vs. Dorada in a rematch for the CMLL Welterweight title and my personal favorite match on paper, Barbaro Cavernario vs. Titan. Should be a great show, so lets get into it!

Sho Tanaka & Yohei Komatsu vs. Stuka Jr. & Fuego**1/2

NJPW is billing this as Tanaka and Komatsu’s swansong from NJPW, they will start up with CMLL in the next few weeks. This was a very fun opening match, when the CMLL guys were in control it sort of died but other than that it was tons of fast paced action. It was nice to see Sho and Yohei mix it up with the lucha dudes, Fuego pinned Komatsu with a Jorge Rivera style pin.

David Finlay, Jushin Liger, KUSHIDA, The Panther & Guerrero Maya Jr. vs. Gedo, YOSHI-HASHI, Boby Zavala, Hechicero & Okumura**

This wasn’t anything special, though there were some nice moments in the match. Hechicero is very jacked I didn’t realize how muscular he was, but he moves very well. The Panther botched a few spots and it sucked because Korakuen sort of laughed at him. I didn’t like this match because we hardly saw any action from Liger, Kushida, Gedo, and Yoshi. Skip this match if you haven’t viewed the show yet.

Juice Robinson & Atlantis vs. EVIL & Tetsuya Naito*3/4

The former CJ Parker is annoying me because I don’t know if he’s a young lion or a NJPW roster member, sometimes he wears all black trunks and sometimes he acts all goofy like in this match. Juice got zero sympathy from the crowd when LOS INGOBERNABLES were in control, Atlantis has been coming to Japan since the 80’s I believe so he was very over. I’ve said this before and I would say it again, Juice has major potential in America but in Japan he just isn’t a good fit. Naito hit the Destino on Juice for the pin-fall, Another skip-able match
Naito ripped Atlantis mask off post-match, I believe CMLL is going to do a Naito/Atlantis feud at some point. Naito also attacked Milano Collection AT and Milano fought back! That was a nice moment.

Mexican National Welterweight Championship: Barbaro Cavernario (c) vs. Titan***1/2

I’m hyped! This was an excellent bout and easily the best thing on the show thus far. I wanted to learn stuff about the CMLL guys and throughout this match I learned that I love both these guys and Titan is really really good. Both those men took insane bumps, the ones that stand out to me are the caveman’s splash to the floor and Titan taking a razor’s edge into the un-padded corner! Crowd really liked Titan, it’d be nice to see Titan in best of the super juniors this year, Cavernario got the win to retain his title with a wacky submission I believe he calls it the ‘La Cavernaria’.

CMLL World Welterweight Championship: BUSHI (c) vs. Mascara Dorada****1/4

Bushi is in all white and he looks like a boss. In mere minutes of the match, Bushi hit a dive in the middle of the crowd! This was an awesome match and it’s a shame Dorada had his best match with NJPW on one of his last nights in Japan. The crowd loved Dorada, so much emotion in this match! Atlantis took care of Naito and Dorada destroyed Evil with a tope. Dorada overcome all the odds and in the end picked up the win to regain his CMLL World Welterweight Championship with the Dorada-Screwdriver. Best match on the show thus far!

Ryusuke Taguchi, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Dragon Lee vs. Kazuchika Okada, Shinsuke Nakamura & Virus***3/4

I don’t like Tanahashi and Okada being in the same match as one another, they should stay as far away from each other as possible. Unless they’re doing a match between the two soon. Virus is a tiny human being. Ryusuke Taguchi was a hoot in this match, legit he was awesome and probably the most popular with the crowd. I was scared the big 3 would take it easy but they all were awesome, especially Tanahashi, he did 2 dives in this match. Another really solid match that the crowd loved, Virus pinned Dragon Lee with a lucha submission that I don’t know the name of.

Volador Jr. & Mistico vs. Ultimo Guerrero & Mephisto****

This is so cool that this is the main event, feels like Arena Mexico. This was a very crisp, innovative match. I loved it, not one mess up. Everyone was excellent, the crowd reactions were good too! Guerrero may as well join the Wrestle-1 stable jackets because he wore his goddamn jacket the entire match. I think there were 8 dives in this match, best quality lucha on the planet in my opinion. Mistico is such a small fellow, his opponents can make him look a million bucks with ranas and planchas. Volador Jr. should be making millions in the WWE, the dude is incredible, he has the looks, charisma,  in-ring capability and everything else you want in a wrestler. Guerrero pinned Mistico with a top top reverse suplex, finish fell flat but other than that the match was phat. Hey, that rhymed!

Very cool show, so good to get singles matches on house show! Please New Japan I want more singles matches please. The top 4 matches were excellent and made up for the weak under card, the last match was the perfect match to end this type of show. There are 2 more Fantastica Mania shows before the CMLL crew head back to the chaos that his Mexico, So be sure to check out this very site as we will have continuous coverage of Fantastica Mania 2016.
