NJPW New Japan Cup: Day 2 Preview & Predictions

The 2nd day of the New Japan Cup 2016, comes from the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo Japan. The show starts at 4am EST / 9am GMT and can be seen live on the WrestlingWithWords Puro Channel!!

As of the time of this writing, only the four tournament matches are known.

Let’s break down the matches.

Satoshi Kojima vs. Toru Yano

No real backstory to this match. Yano will be trolling and Kojima will have to find a way to get the win.

H2H: Satoshi Kojima 3-1 Toru Yano

After extensive research, I have come to the conclusion that Satoshi Kojima wins the entire tournament! You can all hail me when Kojima wins, and you got the scoop here first!

So why do I think Kojima wins? First off, there has never been a heel winner in the NJ Cup before. The whole reason behind the NJ Cup, is to build a face to sellout Sumo Hall. Looking at the field, the remaining possibilities are Kojima, Elgin, Goto & Ishii. I don’t see Ishii with his current run as an ROH champion. I don’t see Goto due to his current storyline. So it’s all down to Kojima & Elgin. And I think Kojima is the better card to play of those two, to sell out Sumo Hall.

Winner: Satoshi Kojima

Tama Tonga vs. Hirooki Goto

This is certainly an interesting matchup. You got Tama Tonga, who has been a loser his entire career until last night. Then you got Goto, who are trying to reinvent himself after his 8th straight loss in Heavyweight title matches.

H2H: Hirooki Goto 2-0 Tama Tonga

There’s two ways to look at this match. Hirooki Goto’s storyline of coming up short could continue here, with a loss to Tama Tonga. One step closer to snapping. On the other hand, I don’t see Tama Tonga getting to the last 4 of the tournament. I think they gave him the Makabe win to set up the tag title challenge, but this is the end of the road for him. Goto probably wins with another roll up.

Winner: Hirooki Goto

Tetsuya Naito vs. Tomohiro Ishii

Ishii defeated Naito’s tag partner EVIL in the 1st round, and is looking to beat another Ingobernable here. Naito may have a hard time tranquilo-ing in this match. The only backstory to this match, was that Ishii & Naito feuded over the NEVER title, back when Naito was still a face. A feud that Ishii came out on top of.

H2H: Tomohiro Ishii 2-1 Tetsuya Naito

I can only see Naito winning this one, since I expect him to go into the final of the tournament. He & Fale are the two heels left against six faces. I expect at least one heel to make it to the semi-finals, and since I don’t think Fale advances, I see Naito advancing here.

Winner: Tetsuya Naito

Michael Elgin vs. Bad Luck Fale

Bad Luck Fale just defeated Elgin’s tag team partner Tanahashi, and Elgin is out to seek revenge. Elgin is looking to prove himself, after just having signed a contract with New Japan!

H2H: 1st Time Matchup

I expect this match to be #BigMike’s crowning moment in New Japan. He just signed a contract with New Japan, and I expect him to beat the monster, that not even Tanahashi could beat. Elgin will get established as a major star here, and it’ll be the beginning of his build towards the main event scene!

Winner: Michael Elgin
