Lucha Underground Review 4/20/16

Welcome back to another Lucha Underground review. I’m so excited for tonight’s episode and I have been all week. In our main event we will see Matanza and Mil Muertes clash in a singles match that’ll sure be hard hitting. Plus, more trios tournament action that will likely have the fans on their feet. So, let’s get into it.

We kick off the show with Fenix in Dario Cueto’s office. Dario gives Fenix the opportunity to team up with Drago & Aerostar in the Trios Tournament. But he changes his mind and teams Fenix with PJ Black and Jack Evans, then puts Aerostar against Drago for an Aztec Medallion.

Aerostar vs. Drago

Fun opener here, both men started off trying to pin each other in many different ways. Then, when the match picked up it seemed like it didn’t stop. They just kept going with very fast pace action and high flying action, that actually backfired on Aerostar at one point. He went to the top, and slipped then fell to the floor hard. I thought he hurt himself but he seemed to be okay after he brushed himself off. After a little more back and forth action, Aerostar picked up the win with a springboard splash to earn an Aztec Medallion.

Taya was backstage with Johnny Mundo and told him that he has a match with Cage, in a Steel Cage next week.

(Trios Tournament First Round) Disciples Of Death vs. PJ Black, Jack Evans & Fenix

Surprisingly, Fenix, Black & Evans worked very, very well as a team. But, the Disciples have obviously been the more packaged team and they held their own. This match was the definition of fun. Just like the rest of the trios tournament matches so far, it was a big cluster of guys flying all around the ring and it was super enjoyable to watch, especially Jack Evans who bantered his own team and opponents a throughout the night, and we even got a 4/20 joke from Vampiro about Jack Evans because why not? In the end, Jack & PJ took out two Disciples while Fenix hit the 450 splash on the other one and picked up the win for his team to advance in the tournament.

Dario had the Trios Champions in his office. He told Ivelisse, Angelico and Son Of Havoc that things have changed. They are in the tournament. The winners of the trios tournament will be the champions. They get a bye to the finals.

Catrina was backstage with the Disciples Of Death. One of them turned on his partners and literally killed them.

(Lucha Underground Championship) Matanza Cueto (c) (w/Dario Cueto) vs. Mil Muertes (w/Catrina)

This match is exactly what you’d expect it to be. Just two huge dudes beating the hell out of each other. No fancy moves here, just strong, brutal shots going back and forth. Though we did see some moves such as clotheslines, suplexes, and powerslams, overall these two were just trying to over power each other which was very fun to watch. For the first time, we witnessed someone bring a fair fight to Matanza. Mil started to dominate Matanza and even pulled out a suicide dive which was great to see. Dario tried to get involved, but ended up being choked, which helped Matanza gain momentum when he attacked Mil from behind. Catrina then tried to get involved, which caused Matanaza to get a steel chair bent around his back by Mil Muertes. The match suddenly turned into a all out brawl and what looked like a keg was used as a weapon. They brawled up the steps and into the crowd, then on top of Dario’s office. This can’t be good, two huge dudes high above everyone. I was right, it wasn’t good… For either man. Mil Muertes fucking hit a flatliner on Matanza through Dario’s office!! That was insane! Neither man could continue and the match was declared a draw. What a spot. My goodness.

That was one hell of a show. Two fun, fast paced matches and a insane main event. Now, was the main event full of cool moves and flipping, fast action? No. But it was a fight. A damn good fight at that, which ended in one of the craziest spots I’ve ever seen in Lucha Underground history. Two huge men crashing through a roof didn’t feel good for either man, but it was damn sure exciting. I can’t wait for more, especially next week since we have a Cage Match, so be sure to check back for that. Thanks for reading.
