DVDVR 1001 Matches #9: Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat (WWF 3/29/87)

To those uninitiated the much respected website Death Valley Driver Video Review is putting together a list of 1001 matches to see before you die called the DVDVR 1001. This is my project where I am reviewing every match in the DVDVR 1001, continuing with #9,

*This is a repost of my original review for Blue Thunder Driver.*

This is for Randy Savage’s WWF Intercontinental Championship.

As stated already, this match has a very large reputation. When I first got into professional wrestling this is the match that most fans told me was the end all and be all of professional wrestling matches. All these years later, and many viewings later, I wouldn’t fall in line with that sentiment. Doesn’t mean this isn’t a great match, because it most certainly is a great match. But a ref bump and some stupid George Steele interference stop this from being the professional wrestling match to end all professional wrestling matches.

Things start out as most Ricky Steamboat matches do, with him hitting some sweet Arm Drags. From there the match quickly settles into a case of Savage destroying Steamboat. Savage controls at least three fourths of the match, and it works well for this match. Steamboat sells terrifically, and really puts himself heavily into the babyface in peril position. Savage holds up his end of the deal by going after Steamboat’s throat with zeal.

Over time the match takes on an ebb and flow quality. Savage is still in control, but Steamboat gets more offense in and slowly asserts himself. The Steamboat explosions of offense are engaging as all get out, but so are the moments of Savage stopping Steamboat with his skill and dickishness. The match essentially falls into the category of shit stirrer heel against the babyface who refuses to quit. Both men fall into those roles nicely, and deliver a great match with lots of heat from a wonderfully developed storyline.

Steamboat versus Savage isn’t the end all and be all of pro wrestling matches. It’s still a great match though and it deserves lots of respect for being as great as it is. Steamboat and Savage, to put it simply, just clicked and on this night that resulted in a fantastic match of the highest order.
