Arena Mexico – Mexico City, Mexico

We open up with a contract signing for Sam Adonis vs Blue Panther in a Hair vs Hair match on CMLL August 4th show. Adonis is showing there is life post WWE. Pretty sad that neither wrestler got a mic.

Puma & Tiger vs. Blue Panther Jr. & The Panther***

If I rated this on a curve of CMLL openers, this would be absolutely amazing, but as a regular match, both teams clearly held back and a lot of the moves were executed sloppily. Both teams showed off their usual good chemistry, but the match lacked any really cool high spots. At one point on commentary it’s said that “this could main event any arena in the world,” despite none of these men ever main-eventing. Fun and watchable, though a bit underwhelming, so the best CMLL opener of the year so far. Puma & Tiger win.

Lightning Match: Blue Panther vs. Sam Adonis***

Lightning matches are a one-fall, ten-minute time limit match.

Sam Adonis is wearing a Love Machine (Blue Panther’s legendary rival who also had a pro-U.S.A. gimmick) mask, to start.

So, with these two having a big hair vs hair match, the goal here should be to make me excited for their big match without doing too much here. They succeeded; Adonis didn’t do anything impressive during his heat segment, but the crowd reacts like he is the devil for it & it makes this feud 1,000x better. Blue Panther kicked out of three atomic leg drops. Hulk Hogan is disappointed that Adonis is not American enough to win with it. Adonis shows he has some lucha skills when he hits a tope. My big complaint with the match is that Adonis took too much of the match, but I guess it’s important to build Adonis as a threat.  Adonis gets the upper hand, but eats a tope from Blue Panther. It ends a time limit draw as both men have a hate-filled brawl in the crowd. Good way to make me anticipate the Hair vs Hair Match, though going in cold this is just OK.

Post match both men have to be pulled apart & start cutting promos on each other. Adonis’ mic cuts out and they brawl some more.

Caristico, Diamante Azul & Marco Corleone vs. Rush, Pierroth & Kraneo***

Pierroth & Diamante Azul brawled a bit & I got flashbacks to a worse time. We got Caristico doing a cool tope, Kraneo doing some sexy gyrating that would make Big E proud, Kraneo failing to get back into the ring, & then Mije gyrated and slapped Marco. Mije took a brutal gorilla press bump & then Marco did a dope running axe handle to the outside. That was all that was worth a damn from this match. Skippable, but a fun third  fall that was there more for the live crowd. Rush fouls Caristico to get his team disqualified.

La Copa Natalia Vasquez Cibernético Seeding Battle Royal*

This was a dumb concept that was OK in execution. It got like 7 minutes & there were really only two notable things:

  1. ) Lady Maravilla of lucha indie fame made her CMLL debut by getting kicked in the vagina twice.
  2. ) By gawd, some of these luchadoras do a terrible job going over the top rope. It really makes you appreciate most competent wrestlers who can actually get thrown over the top rope.

We go straight into the match once the final two are in the ring, in a very smooth transition to finish up a waste of time.

La Copa Natalia Vasquez Cibernético**

Cubsfan noted this went this went 35:35; 43:10 if you count the Battle Royal. This did not need that time. This did not need a battle royal beforehand to make the length even longer. This did not need to stay at the same pacing, making every spot feel similar. This did need more memorable spots. This did need something to keep the crowd invested, instead of draining them. At least Lady Maravilla looked good in her debut, and as a whole, the match was technically sound. The final two, rivals Sugehit & Zeuxis had a really clean finishing sequence that makes me want them in a Mask vs Mask Match. Not worth spending nearly an hour on. Trust me, it’s not worth it. Princesa Sugehit wins La Copa Natalia Vasquez & a nice little trophy.

Volador Jr., Dragon Lee & Niebla Roja vs. Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero & Euforia***

Niebla Roja & Team Guerrero have been feuding for a few weeks. By the end of this match, I wanted to cheer the heels,Team Guerrero, due to just how impressive they looked. Everything they did was crisp, clean and unique. The face team also had some really crazy high-flying offense. Ultimately, this was more a fun main event to send the crowd home, rushed due to the ungodly amount of time they gave the Cibernetico. Gran Guerrero unmasked Niebla to get his team disqualified.

  • Decent - 6/10

In a sentence I never thought I would type, Sam Adonis was the highlight of CMLL this week. We are in big match build up time for CMLL, with the Lightning match being the only thing I found worth a watch to get a taste for BP vs Adonis. The other matches showed hints of potential CMLL bet matches, such as Gran Guerrero/Niebla Roja & Zeuxis/Sugehit.
