Soberano Jr. celebrates his Copa Jr. victory

Arena Mexico – Mexico City, Mexico

Eléctrico & Fantasy vs. Pequeño Nitro & Pequeño Olímpico***

This was a fun match that never dragged. All four luchadors here showed talent and chemistry with each other and made this match feel a lot less lethargic than most CMLL openers. The only major complaint I have is that this match did go a few minutes too long, but still a satisfying watch. Electrico and Fantasy win in 15:02

We get the usual interview with a female fan at ringside.

Estrellita, Metálica, Sanely vs. Dalys, Marcela, Zeuxis**3/4

Relevos Incredibles match – When the Rudo and Tecnico wrestlers are on the same team.

While there were some contrived spots and botches, the match had a good flow, the action never slowed down and the crowd reacted to everything. Estrellita, Sanely and Metálica won in 9:09. The post-match beatdown saw Dalys and Zeuxis turning on their partner, which came off poorly, and will probably lead to nothing.

We get the Boing Dragon Rojo Jr apple juice commercial again. It is still amazing.

La Copa Jr. Finals: Soberano Jr. vs. Sanson***1/2

Both luchadors won their block’s Cibernetico to advance to this match. Dragon Lee is Soberano Jr’s second in this match. A nice touch to make a CMLL main eventer cheer Soberano Jr. on. The first fall of this match did not connect with me, it felt slow paced and like it wanted to be technical, while the second fall fixed those complaints, it also only lasted a minute. Sanson got way too much in at the beginning of the third fall, making Soberano Jr. look like a jabroni. They waited to start doing the highspots for a while, and when they finally did the crowd popped hugely, these highspots included: tope suicidas, a springboard splash to the outside, head scissors to the outside. and a dive off the entrance ramp. The finishing stretch was a lot less hot than the highspot sequence but still left the match at the right time to conclude the biggest CMLL match of both luchadors careers on a satisfying note at 18:33. Soberano Jr. celebrates his La Copa Jr. win post-match.

We get a tribute to the recently deceased Brazo De Oro, La Mascara – Oro’s son looks incredibly shaken by this. RIP Brazo De Oro. La Mascara talks about the impact his father has had on him and that he loves him. Classy and well done by both CMLL and La Mascara.

Valiente, Diamante Azul & Marco Corleone vs. Hechicero, Kraneo & Ripper**

While there was technically nothing wrong with this, I could not bring myself to care about it after the Brazo De Oro tribute, and ultimately this match went too long and was just a hard skip with nothing memorable to it. Team Azul won in 13:56.

Caristico, Mistico & Dragon Lee vs. Mephisto, Barbaro Cavernario & Mephisto***3/4

I can’t help but notice Dragon Lee has different attire than when he was out earlier to second Soberano Jr. This was a fun mid-card match that let the live crowd see some big stars. Everyone worked well with each other, and we got plenty of crazy sequences and spots, if you ever feel like watching a great CMLL trios match, this would be a good choice. Dragon Lee, Mistico & Caristico won in 12:18. WTF CMLL?! Why did the generic trios match that happened before this go longer?

La Mascara vs. Volador Jr.***1/2

This was a brawl with some high flying weaved in. Throughout the whole match both men fought with intensity, during the first two falls, in particular, La Mascara looked like he just wanted to murder Volador Jr, and while Volador Jr did great here, today was the La Mascara show with putting on one of the best performances of his career in a back and forth match. His father would be proud. La Mascara wins in 12:39.

La Mascara and Volador Jr. give each other a show of respect, and then La Mascara does a Brazo De Oro tribute with the crowd to end the show.

  • STRONG EFFORT - 7/10

OVERALL

This feels weird to give a score to as seeing the whole Brazo De Oro tribute situation. We got a few enjoyable undercard matches, Soberano Jr. got another big win this year, and we were given an appropriate main event.
